Fathom Preview
Shortly after the discontinuation of the full-sized all-electric F-150 Lightning, Ford has a fresh and exciting plan to release a midsized electric pickup. The affordable and roughly Ranger-sized Fathom will be the first vehicle produced on Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) Platform.
Ford chose the name Fathom to reflect a concept along the lines of “real depth comes from deeply understanding how you live.” The eco-friendly truck is planned with a roomy interior and technology that adapts to the changing needs of the driver and passengers. And speaking of the occupants, they’ll be plenty comfortable, since the Fathom will have more interior space than one of the best-selling vehicles across all categories, the Toyota RAV4. Its attractive starting price of $28,350 (plus dealer documentation fee and destination/delivery charges) is sure to attract a lot of sales, including first-time new-vehicle buyers, and grab a share of the crossover and SUV markets.
Ford recently spent $2 billion converting its Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP) from building gasoline-powered vehicles to fully electric models. The UEV Platform that the Fathom will use represents the future for Ford’s EV production. It’s differentiated by an innovative assembly line technique that will increase output by allowing more people to work at once. Assembly will be separated into three sections – battery, front clip, and rear clip – as opposed to the traditional method of workers installing parts to a fully formed vehicle as it rolls down the line.

Origin and Inspiration
While the word fathom has multiple definitions, the one that most inspired Ford in naming its all-electric light truck was “come to understand.” To that end, an understanding of the target consumer’s needs is what inspired and motivated the model’s development team to develop this reasonably priced and versatile pickup. (Not that it was an automatic choice: Ford has stated that the naming process for the model took nine months.) These R&D folks are well aware that there’s a strong market for a consumer who needs a truck that is not an F-150, and this goes beyond size and capability to critical qualities such as adaptability and affordability.
Ford’s vision for the Fathom was to capture and execute the mindset of this class of buyer, and going by the information they’ve released about it to date, they have succeeded. Beyond that definition, fathom conveys the concept of depth below the surface, as in a vehicle that is more than it appears to be at a glance. Ford wants the world to know that there’s much, much more to this battery-electric pickup than can be seen from the outside. Here’s how the automaker expressed it in their marketing materials for this new model: “As customers start exploring the technology and design of Fathom, that's when the connection between name, product and driver becomes clear.”
Standard and Available Features
The 2027 Fathom will be loaded with the standard features today’s buyers demand, including the latest technologies for driver-assistance and connectivity. One expectation is for a large touchscreen multimedia system complete with Apple Maps navigation and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility. Its other useful tech features will include a digital key and remote management of certain truck features via the Ford app. For keeping cargo organized, in addition the the traditional truck bed it will have a useful front trunk (frunk), plus the aforementioned generous interior space. All trims will be set up Ford’s proprietary BlueCruise hands-free driving assistance technology as well as bidirectional charging, meaning its battery can be used to charge or run external devices (or even add charge to another EV). Interested buyers can pre-order the Fathom in early 2027, with production of those vehicles starting in the spring.
