As mentioned above, Ford has revamped the ‘23 Escape’s trim lineup, which is now made up of the Base, Active, ST-Line, ST-Line Select, ST-Line Elite, and Platinum. Ford’s 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine (181 hp and 190 lb.-ft. of torque) comes in the two lowest-priced trims, but a heartier 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder (250 hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque) is standard in the ST-Line Select, ST-Line Elite, and Platinum. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard in the Base, Active, ST-Line, and Platinum, while all-wheel drive (which is standard in the ST-Line Select and ST-Line Elite) is available. Escapes with the 1.5-liter EcoBoost are rated to tow up to 2,000 pounds, while those with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost and optional Class II Trailer Tow Package can handle up to 3,500 lb.
The 2023 Ford Escape Base receives LED headlights, dual chrome exhaust tips, remote keyless entry, an 8-inch LCD instrument cluster, selectable drive modes, two USB-A ports, a 12-volt power outlet, an overhead console sunglasses holder, and a 60/40-split fold-down second-row seatback. The Active serves up a power liftgate, rear privacy glass, proximity entry (Intelligent Access), push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, illuminated vanity mirrors, two rear USB ports (one Type-A and one Type-C), a wrapped steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a seatback pocket on the passenger seat. The dynamic ST-Line flaunts a sporty black mesh grille, roof rails, a rear skid plate, a single-wing rear spoiler, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and red interior contrast stitching.
The ST-Line Select adds remote start, a heated steering wheel, LED fog lights, heated side mirrors, and heated front seats. The ST-Line Elite is distinguished by an LED light bar that stretches across the front end. It also gets rain-sensing windshield wipers, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a wireless phone charger, ambient interior lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, position memory for the side mirrors and driver’s seat, and a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat. The Platinum doesn’t come with the sportier ST-Line attributes (such as the black grille, skid plate, spoiler, flat-bottomed steering wheel, or red contrast stitching), but it does have everything else from the ST-Line Elite, in addition to a HomeLink universal garage door opener.
The Ford Co-Pilot360 suite is standard in every trim. The Base, Active, ST-Line, and ST-Line Select have pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The ST-Line Elite and Platinum also get adaptive cruise control, lane centering, speed sign recognition, evasive steering assist, rear parking sensors, and a surround-view camera.
Ford has installed the latest SYNC 4 infotainment system in the revised Escape. The Base trim’s setup has an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, and a six-speaker sound system. SiriusXM satellite radio is added to the Active trim and above, while the ST-Line Elite and Platinum are upgraded with a 13.2-inch touchscreen with integrated navigation.
Some signature upgrade packages can be ordered to enhance the appeal of the ‘23 Escape. The Cold Weather Package is optional for the FWD Active and ST-Line but comes standard in conjunction with AWD. It includes remote start and heating for the front seats, side mirrors, and steering wheel. The Active, ST-Line, and ST-Line Select are eligible for the Tech Package #1, which consists of Ford Co-Pliot360 Assist+ (adaptive cruise control, lane centering assist, speed sign recognition, evasive steering assist, and rear parking sensors) and a 13.2-inch touchscreen with built-in navigation. The Active and ST-Line Select qualify for the Tech Package #2, which will supply the contents of the previous two packages along with reverse automatic emergency braking, intersection assist, a surround-view camera, power-adjustable front seats, a premier 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, HD radio, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, position memory for the driver’s seat and side mirrors, a keyless entry keypad, a wireless phone charger, and enhanced voice recognition. The Premium Technology Package for the ST-Line Elite and Platinum will stock those trims with active parking assist, the B&O audio system, a head-up display, and quilted leather seats with perforation. Last, the Class II Trailer Tow Package is offered for the ST-Line Select, ST-Line Elite, and Platinum to increase towing to 3,500 lb.
